Even though it seems like just another form of internet chatting, it really can be used as an effective marketing tool. In fact, there are some things you cannot do through normal marketing channels that are easy to accomplish through social media sites.

Here are just three ways you can use sites such as LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook to create your own community.

1. Locate new customers

Keyword searching on the social media site can add customers for your company that you have not been aware of before. These customers could be helped through your products and/or services. It is possible to generate 100 or more leads a month this way if you are careful about selecting keyword search phrases.

2. Keep your customers informed

If you travel a lot, or are just out and about a lot of the workday, using Twitter can help your customers see what your path looks like. This technique is useful when operating shows or events where your customers can see or learn about your products and services.

3. Sharing knowledge in your area of expertise

When you are an expert in your area of marketing, you can further your position in the market by sharing some of your expertise. It helps you to become the “go-to” person in your area and that can only help your sales position. If you run a spa or salon, for example, sharing makeup or product tips helps boost your position. If you run a cleaning service, good advice on the odd spot-removal procedure would always be welcome.

Reach you customers through social media sites in ways that you cannot through normal marketing means. It is an effective tool to include in your marketing toolbox. Join the 21st century and see for yourself the incremental value of social media marketing.

Here’s a creative little music video that demonstrates how socializing and dating has changed since the Social Media Revolution (did you know that 1 in 8 people found love online last year?!).

The movie, He’s Just Not That Into You, also speaks to this phenomenon of dating online in 2009. Drew Barrymore’s character laments to her friends (paraphrasing):

“He MySpaced me and then messaged my BlackBerry, so I texted his cell and then he emailed my home account and I left a voicemail…I remember the days when there was one home line and one answering machine and inside that answering machine was one cassette tape where he did or didn’t leave you a message. Now you have to go around checking all these different portals just so you can be rejected by seven kinds of technology.”

Ok, now for the oh-so-very-hokey hoedown video parody:
